A proposed agreement between Langley Christian & Missionary Alliance Church and the city for joint use of an upgraded parking lot on church property will be considered by the Langley City Council next week.

The council will meet Tuesday because of Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at city hall on Second Street.

Under the proposed project, in the works since 2004, the city would share the cost of paving and upgrading the church parking lot at Sixth Street and Cascade Avenue. The city would use $480,000 in grant money already approved, in exchange for 50 public parking spaces.

Supporters say the new park-and-ride spaces would relieve congestion downtown, but environmental opponents call it “a boondoggle.”

Also on Tuesday’s agenda will be amendments to the 2010 budget and first reading of a proposed ordinance defining job descriptions for the police department prior to the March retirement of Chief Bob Herzberg, who has been with the department for 32 years.
