“South Whidbey American Legion Post 141 served 250 turkey and ham dinners on Thanksgiving Day.Post Commander Jim Horton said the food was great and everyone had an enjoyable feast. “It is difficult to name all the wonderful volunteers who made this dinner possible for fear that we could forget someone,” he said. “To all of you, a special thanks from Post 141, as you made the day for us and our dinner guests.”However, a special thanks goes out to the following for their donations, which helped provide all the wonderful food for the dinner offered free to the community: Matt Nichols of Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, South Whidbey Eagles and Auxiliary, Ray Reed, Interwest Bank, Whidbey Island Bank, Waterman Self Storage, Norman Barnett in memory of his wife Marty who was a post 141 member, and the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club.Thanks also to the dinner guests who made a donation. After all expenses were paid, there was $194 left over to donate to Good Cheer.The community dinner was also made possible by the South Whidbey School District, which allowed the use of the bus barn kitchen, and to the Eagles and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where kitchens and equipment were also made available. Also, thanks to The South Whidbey Record, which provided publicity.Approximately 50 dinners were delivered from the bus barn to shut-ins, and another 45 dinners were take-outs from the post, which welcomed 145 for the sit-down dinner in the holiday-decorated hall.“The entire effort of our post members, Sons of the Legion, and our Ladies Auxiliary was superb and we are looking forward to our third annual Thanksgiving feast next year,” said Horton. “Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous 2000.””
