“The Langley Middle School Cougar tracksters began their season last week with a home meet against Monroe and North Lake Middle Schools. The Cougars out-ran, out-jumped and out-threw their competition by scoring 271 points compared to North Lake’s 135 and Monroe’s 96.The eighth grade boys placed first led by Nick Plastino, who won all four of his events, winning the hurdles, 100 meter dash, and high and long jump. Killian Moote won the 400 and teamed up with Abe Cutler, Travis Tornga, and Kyle McGillen to win the 400 relay. Also pointing for the eighth grade boys was Ronnie Walthers, Phil Schorr, Spencer Buckman, Eli Murphy, and Jon Arnold.The eighth grade girls were not to be outdone by the boys and also finished first by pasting the other teams with an 80 to 36 to 20 victory. Katy McGillen won all four of her events, the hurdles, long and high jump, and joined Chloe Pfeiffer, Kerry Mann, and Malaena Hymas to win the 800 relay.Claudia Gil-Osoria won the 100 meter dash. Hymas placed first in the 800 and Britt Hansen in her very first track meet won both the 400 and 200 meter races. Other point getters included Colleen Johnson, Anna Gilles, Nicole Mock, Hallie Mansfield, Sara Hezel, Nici Eaton, Brittany Peterson, Jordon Tobler, and Kristi Knox.The seventh grade boys put a world of hurt on their competition by scoring 70 points to only 22 points by second place Monroe. The boys won 11 out of the 12 events. Tyler Rueth placed first in the hurdles, Drew Aernie was first in the 1,600 meter, Holton Schmidt first in the 800 meter, Paul Taylor first in the 400 meter, Adam Tenuta first in the 100 and 200 meter, Jacob Royds first in the long jump, Mark Iddins first in the high jump, and Daniel Richards first in the discus. Also scoring for the seventh grade boys was Kyle Cramer, Michael Greene, Tanner McInerney, and Kevin Dunnigan.The seventh grade girls finished the sweep with its first place team finish. The girls were led by Carrie Anderson’s victories in the hurdles and 400 meter run, Kelly DeGraaf’s win in the 1,600, and Becky Gabelein’s victory in the 800. Kelson Graham Wright joined Kelly, Carrie and Becky to win the 800 relay. Mosa Collins placed first in the high jump. Other pointers included Natalie Alexander, Kellie Schorr, Nancy Godsey, Tacy Reading, Mary McCune, Kelsey Roberts, and Stephanie Elf.This week the Cougar tracksters travel to Marysville and Lynden. Their next home meet will be May 30.”
