Positions on Island County’s most high-profile volunteer board are open after two members quit prematurely.
The resignations from the Island County Planning Commission were a result of a disagreement in philosophy with the county commissioners, according to Commissioner Jill Johnson.
As a result, commissioners are seeking applicants interested in serving on the commission, which consists of nine volunteer citizens — three from each of the commissioner districts. The planning commission makes recommendations to the county commissioners in matters concerning growth and development, which is especially important this year due to the ongoing comprehensive plan amendment process.
Planning commissions for the county and municipalities have served as stepping stones for many people seeking elected positions over the years.
The current vacancies are Position 3 in District 1, which encompasses all of Whidbey Island south of the greater Oak Harbor area, and Position 1 in District 2, which encompasses greater Oak Harbor and the surrounding area. Planning commission members must reside in the district they are appointed to represent.
The planning commission meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month in the County Commissioners’ Hearing Room in the Courthouse Annex in Coupeville.
According to a press release, meetings are approximately two hours long; preparation and research are necessary.
Commissioners appoint planning commission members to four-year terms, which may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Interested individuals should provide a letter of interest and statement of qualifications by mail to Island County Board of Commissioners, ATTN: Planning Commission Vacancies, 1 NE 7th Street, Coupeville, WA 98239.
