There soon may be more parking at Deer Lake, thanks to the pending donation of a parcel of land because the owner grew tired of paying taxes on it.

“It was a very generous offer,” said Steve Marx, assistant director of Public Works and parks director. “Once we finish the paperwork, it will be a done deal.”

County staff briefed county commissioners on the gift at a work session last week. The 60-by-118-foot lot at Deer Lake Road and Brook Street is being given to the county by Li-Yeh Huang of Bellevue, who has owned it for 20 years.

The undeveloped property is currently assessed by the county at $25,000, and the annual taxes are $181, Marx said.

He said the property can’t be developed because of a county right-of-way easement, road setbacks prohibiting building and inadequate space for a septic system.

Marx said Huang contacted the county with the proposal, and county commissioners gave Marx the go-ahead to complete the deal.

He said the county plans to clear the property and build a parking lot for the trucks and boat trailers of lake users.

“Space for those is pretty scarce down there,” Marx said.
