A bicycle commuter who apparently ran a red light at the Clinton ferry dock was badly hurt Monday morning when he collided with a van.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Gary Warstler, 47, of Langley failed to yield at the stoplight at the bottom of the hill leading to the ferry dock at about 8:21 a.m. On his way through the intersection, Warstler’s bicycle struck a 1996 Ford van that was taking a left turn onto Columbia Beach Drive. In the ensuing crash, Warstler struck his head on the pavement.

Though he was wearing a helmet, paramedics and volunteer aid workers spent about a half-hour stabilizing Warstler for transport to Whidbey General Hospital. He was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. On Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for the hospital said Warstler was under the care of a neurosurgeon and was in satisfactory condition.

The driver of the van, 29-year-old Timothy McGee of Kirkland, was not injured in the accident, nor did his van suffer noticeable damage. He was not cited for any traffic violations by the state patrol.
