Despite some big numbers, JV boys still struggle to put up wins

But physically big team seems to have a bigger future

The future is unknown, but one fact is for certain: The players on the South Whidbey High School boys junior varsity and C-squad basketball teams will be there.

With a record of 3-11 as of last week, the junior varsity team’s record does not reflect the talent that is on the court according to team coach Greg Coleman. He said a team play strategy is being emphasized during the Falcons’ 20-game schedule. The team’s starting lineup — freshman point guard Chad Anderson, junior shooting guard Andrew Hosmer, sophomore small forward Duncan Adams, junior power forward Matt Bolvin, and sophomore center Ian Ward — has been able to put up big numbers outside of the win-loss record. Just ask the Turks from Sultan. The boys team scored 87 points to blow the Turks out Dec. 19.

This season, the offense has been controlled by Anderson, who has also played a number of varsity minutes in his rookie season. For him, the game comes down to having good hands and good ball control.

“I’m a passer,” said Anderson, who was a standout at Langley Middle School and played AAU ball in grades 3-6.

His high school coach agrees with his assessment of the game.

“The most important statistical category in a basketball game is the turnovers,” Coleman said.

Helping the team’s number game on the scoreboard has been Hosmer. He has a season high game of 20 points and averages about 12 points per game.

The team’s chief advantage in the coming years may come from the size of its players. Bolvin is the tallest at 6 feet, 4 inches, followed by junior Devin Parrick at 6-3 and Adams — a six-point-per-game player — at 6-2.

Adams, Bolvin and 6-1 Ward have been a triple threat in games this season, using their size to their advantage.

“Give me the ball and I can score. Ian can score, too,” Bolvin said.

Bolvin scores an average of 10 points per game and is blocking about three shots per game. Against Nooksack Valley earlier this season, he had a season high of five blocks. Ward averages eight points and eight rebounds a game.

The team also has a fair-sized bench, with sophomores John Sarkis and JD Peters and juniors Drew Aernie, Devin Parrick and Logan Hanna ready for action.

This season’s C-squad, coached by Eddy Mulcahy, is comprised of Jason Tenuta, Lakota Holder, Nolan Martin, Robbie Bailey, Ben Potter, Jason Craig, Seth Messer, Danny Para, Nate Higman, and Nick Martin.
