Commissioners of Island County Diking District 1 will have a special meeting this week to discuss the county’s proposal to create a clean water utility.
The meeting will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, in the conference room of Edwards & Associates, 5492 Harbor Ave. in Freeland.
The district’s three commissioners will discuss how the new plan fits with an agreement already in place between the district and the county, signed during the process of obtaining a controversial new pump about five years ago, Diking Commissioner Ray Gabelein said Monday.
“The draft ordinance doesn’t appear to reflect that agreement,” Gabelein said.
The countywide plan for a new utility is designed as a comprehensive set of programs to protect water resources, and would include additional fees.
