South Whidbey schools’ $15 million budget will have its first fully-formed review by the public and by the school board Wednesday.

Assistant Superintendent Dan Poolman will present the 2013-14 school year budget July 24 during the board’s business meeting. The estimated revenue of $15,098,763 is a slight increase from the previous year by about $70,000, and the first uptick in several years.

Voters approved a capital/technology levy increase in February that will kick in next year. Approval of the district’s maintenance and operations levy combined with the increased levy secured about $5.9 million in local funding for the schools, more than a third of its revenue.

Enrollment for the coming school year is projected to continue its decade-long decline. In Poolman’s slideshow presentation on the district’s website, 1,422 students enrolled in the South Whidbey School District last year. He projects 43 fewer students in 2013-14.

The board will vote on the budget later in the meeting which begins with a workshop at 5 p.m.

Ten district policies are also on the board’s agenda that evening. The directors will look at graduation requirements, public access to district records, school driver safety, the length of the work day, student safety walking to school and riding buses and financial reports.

School board meetings are held at the former primary school campus, now home to South Whidbey Academy. It is located at 5476 Maxwelton Road, Langley.
