Students of Armstrong Taekwondo in Clinton recently competed in a regional tournament where over a dozen students earned top-three placings.
Students in kids division (nine to 17 years old) were Joseph Chia (third, combat sparring), Dane Saxton (first, traditional weapons forms; second, extreme weapons form; third, extreme forms), Julia Napoli (first, extreme weapons form; first creative forms), Kai Gallagher (third, traditional forms), Trevor Hardaway (third, combat sparring), Nicholas Armstrong (third, traditional forms; second, combat sparring; second extreme forms; second extreme weapons form; first creative weapons form), Josephine Chia (third, traditional forms; second, combat sparring), Cassie Terrell (first, combat sparring; second, traditional weapons form; first, extreme forms), Christian Terrell (second, traditional weapons form).
Placing in the adult division (18 and up) was Robert Armstrong (second, traditional forms; first, traditional weapons form; second, sparring; third, combat sparring; third, extreme weapons form; third, extreme forms), Jeffrey Chia (second, traditional forms), Stephanie Chia (third, traditional forms; third sparring; first, combat sparring), Mike Napoli (first, extreme forms; second, extreme weapons form) and Amber Terrell (second, traditional forms; first, traditional weapons form).
The tournament was a prelude to the district championships to be held June 4 in Seattle. Competitors from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Canada will compete in the tournament.
Eleven students also won 34 state championships in eight different divisions, which are awarded based on points compiled throughout the season. Winning state titles were Cassie Terrell, Hardaway, Nicholas Armstrong, Saxton, Julia Napoli, Amber Terrell, Mike Napoli, Stephanie Chia, Jeffrey Chia, Tara Armstrong and Robert Armstrong.
