Driver killed in high-speed accident on South Whidbey

A former South Whidbey man was killed in a one-car crash in Clinton last week.

A former South Whidbey man was killed in a one-car crash in Clinton last week, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Shawn A. Poolman, a 40-year-old who recently lived in Bellingham, died at the scene of the crash.

The State Patrol reported that Poolman was driving a 1995 Nissan Maxima south on Highway 525 near milepost 9 at a high rate of speed on Nov. 26. The car left the roadway, struck a fence and came to rest about 30 feet off the northbound shoulder. The accident was reported at 8:51 a.m.

Poolman was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred. The passenger, 40-year-old Tiffany Benson-Burton of Clinton, was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

A Langley police officer had pursued Poolman’s car prior to the accident to attempt a traffic stop but had terminated the pursuit because of safety concerns.

The cause of the accident is considered to be speed. The State Patrol reported that it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

The car was totaled in the accident.
