A 33-year-old South Whidbey man who allegedly threatened an Island County Sheriff’s Deputy after being pulled over for speeding on the highway could face up to eight months in jail.

Douglas Caton was charged in Island County Superior Court Dec. 31 with felony harassment and DUI.

According to an Island County Sheriff’s Office report, the deputy clocked Caton’s truck traveling at over 70 miles per hour on Highway 525 the night of Dec. 27. The deputy chased the pickup with his lights going. Caton didn’t immediately stop, but sped up to 83 mph before pulling over at Resort Road, the report says.

The deputy wrote that Caton failed several roadside sobriety tests, including finger dexterity and the one-leg stand. Davis arrested him and put him in his patrol car.

Caton became angry and started yelling from inside the car, the report states. The arresting deputy wrote that Caton chanted, “You’re dead” and threatened to “snipe” him.

“He appeared crazed,” the report reads, “and intent in his convictions to actually do what he threatened.”

Caton later started crying and apologized.

According to the report, Caton’s blood-alcohol content was measured twice, once at .20 percent and a second time at .17 percent.

The legal limit is .08 percent.
