How students get to school in the South Whidbey School District is among the policies to be reviewed by the school board.

Board members will convene tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to review a slew of policies, ranging from graduation requirements to public access to district records. Totaled, the board and Superintendent Jo Moccia will discuss changes to eight district policies.

Most of the policies will be updated with simple language tweaks. The student safety walking to school and riding buses policy had a couple of key additions, including one emergency evacuation drill held within the first two weeks of each semester from school buses and the prohibition of allowing anyone on the bus who is not a student or a district-authorized person.

Public records from the school district will be maintained in online records on the retention schedule set by the state.

Graduation requirements will shift for the class of 2016. Students who are now freshmen or ninth graders have an increased load in English to four credits (essentially four years or eight semesters) and three credits of social studies. Electives were reduced to four credits from 5.5 in the previous requirements.

There will also be discussion of finding a new location for school board meetings, which are held in the board room at the South Whidbey Primary Campus.

The public meeting will recess for an executive session about contract negotiations and the superintendent’s evaluation.
