A one-car rollover, which ejected one of it’s passengers in the accident, blocked traffic for two hours Friday night on Honeymoon Bay Road.

Jenny Rose Smith, 16, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe, said she sped up to avoid hitting a deer, according to Island County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Smith said Jenny Rose Smith was traveling between 62 and 68 mph at the time of the crash. She was in a 35 mph zone.

According to a report by the investigating deputy, Smith lost control of her vehicle and hit an embankment, which rolled the vehicle. The accident occurred near the intersection with Bercot Road. Smith was traveling toward Highway 525.

Smith’s passenger, Timothy Gathings, 18, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected through the Tahoe’s rear window, according to Smith. Gathings was the only occupant of the car not wearing a seatbelt.

According to Jan Smith, several 911 callers reported seeing Gathings lying on Honeymoon Bay Road next to the vehicle. Luckily, the accident was not as serious as it seemed. Gathings was transported to Whidbey General Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Jenny Rose Smith and passengers Tatyana Barnes and Nikki Degryse were transported to Whidbey General Hospital and treated for minor abrasions. They were all released from the hospital that evening.

According to Jan Smith, inexperienced driving and the Tahoe’s high center of gravity were factors in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation and no citations have been issued.
