Bronwyn Russell and Julie Robinson gave new meaning to the phrase “long shot favorite” last weekend.

Playing in the championship game of the Falcon Classic tournament Saturday against visiting Sequim, the two Falcon guards made big baskets to give their team a 67-66 overtime win.

With time running out in fourth quarter, Russell hit a 10-foot baseline jumper to knot the game at 56-56 and send it into overtime. Then, as the OT period wore down, Russell and Robinson nailed back-to-back three pointers to bring South Whidbey back from the dead by erasing a 66-61 deficit in the game’s final 14 seconds.

The late-game heroics came after the Falcons seemed to have their legs kicked out from under them. Senior Hilary Wick, who tied her season scoring high with 26 against Sequim, fouled out late in the game along with rebounding ace Melissa Poolman and starter Brianna Hussey.

But even with three bench players on the floor and a poor 28 percent shooting ratio for the night, the Falcons got the job done. Five-for-eight three-point shooting proved to be the difference, said Falcon Coach Sam Lee, though winning the rebounding battle 67-51 certainly did not hurt.

With the win, the Falcons not only became champions of their own tournament, but also crept closer to a .500 record.

Now 4-5, the team is looking for its first conference win of the season — and then a few more to guarantee a district playoff spot.

Lucky play was not on South Whidbey’s end of the court in the junior varsity game. The younger girls lost a 44-33 game to Olympic in the JV championship game.

The girls play next on Tuesday in a road game in Mount Baker.
