Falcon linkers at top of the food chain

Strong, Dettrich push scores down

The sun is out, the shot counts are coming down and golf is in the air — at least for the boys playing for South Whidbey High School.

Coming off spring break, the Falcons spent this past week shooting right past their North Cascades Conference competition and perfecting their putts and drives against some of the few Washington teams that are clearly their betters.

At Useless Bay Golf and Country Club Thursday, several of the the Falcon boys flirted with par in a 9-hole match against teams from Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley. With a team score of 197 strokes, South Whidbey’s top five gapped the Lyncs by 28 points and the Pioneers by 62. Junior Reed Dettrich made co-medalist with Lynden Christian’s Andrew Evans with a one-over-par 36. Close behind, Jeff Strong — who has led his team in most of the matches this season — hit a 38, and Kevin Carter a 39. Senior Bryan Wilson came next with a 41, a score that came after he stayed on par through the first five holes. Sophomore Drew Aernie finished out the scoring with a 43.

Falcon coach Mick Heggenes said the sub-200 score was outstanding for this point in the season.

“Any time you can get under two bills, that’s great,” he said.

The victory comes after the Falcons won a tight 408-426 match against 3A Monroe on the road. Strong was the top Falcon with a 74 for 18 holes on the par-70 Echo Falls course. Carter shot a 76 on the course, Dettrich an 83, Chris Erickson an 84, and Aernie a 91.

The only course on which the Falcons were not at the top of the food chain was Saturday’s Dolan Invitational at the Everett Golf and Country Club. There, South Whidbey place eighth of 18 teams, 15 of which were 3A or 4A schools. Strong carried the torch for South Whidbey, placing seventh overall on a score of 79, four strokes off the winner.

The remainder of the team shot in the 80s and above on what Heggenes said was a windy, tough course. Aernie was the Number 2 golfer for the team with an 86. Following were Wilson with an 89, and Dettrich and Carter with 90s.
