It’s coming down to the wire for the Falcon girl’s tennis team as they head into their final week of regular play.

The won-loss record looks good for South Whidbey at nine wins and just two losses — to 3A Sedro Woolley and Lakewood — but the team is facing some tough challenges this week as the Falcons make up a number of games postponed earlier in the season due to rain.

With three more meets to play this week, the South Whidbey girls will be facing some of the tougher competitors in the North Cascades Conference when they meet Lakewood today at home, Sedro Woolley on the road Thursday, and Burlington at home on Friday for the final regular-season matchup of the season.

At home on Monday, the Falcons gave the week a good start, beating Blaine 6-1. The only loser for the Falcons was Sonya Morphew, who still had a strong, 6-4, 5-7 and Number 1 singles.

Falcon coach Tom Kramer said the loss was a bit of a surprise.

“She had beat her once early in the season,” Kramer said of Morphew’s opponent.”

Kramer will change some of the playing positions on the team to see how his players fare. He needs to decide who will play in which positions at the sub-district meet next week.

“We’ll see who is ready to step up and play well,” he said. “They are definitely playing better but need to improve significantly for the playoffs.”

Kramer said he has seen several players improve this season.

“To date Sonya Morphew, Chelsea Miller and Catie Newman have shown the most overall improvement, but there are still plenty of matches for some of the others to impress me.”

Post-season tournament play begins with sub-district tournament on May 16 -17, districts in Mount Vernon, May 23-24 and state in Federal Way May 30-31.

“It is very important that we finish strong this week, and get ourselves prepared for the sub-district and district tournaments,” Kramer said.
