The Falcons will head to district championships Friday after winning the North Cascades Conference championships for the fourth consecutive year.

At Lynden Christian on Friday, both South Whidbey teams blew away the competition at championships and took home team records with a record amount of points, according to Falcon Coach Doug Fulton.

Fulton said the girls team got things started with a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 finish in the 100 meter hurdles for 26 points.

Junior Katy McGillen was the leading scorer for the girls by winning the high jump, triple jump and javelin, and came in second in the 100 meter hurdles. Fulton said McGillen is the state leader in the high jump with a 5-6 jump.

Claudia Gil-Osorio took first place in both the 100 and 200 meter runs, and Kimery Hern won the discus, according to Coach Fulton. Fulton said the girls scored in every event except the pole vault.

The boys won six individual events led by Andy Wills in the 100, 200 and 400 meter runs and Kyle McGillen won the high jump and triple jump, according to Coach Fulton. He said Travis Tornga won the javelin with a personal record throw of 173-2, and is the state leader in 2A.

Both boy’s relays won their events. In the 400 meter relay was Zach Taylor, Nick Plastino, McGillen and Adam Tenuta and in the 1600 meter relay was Plastino, Alex Hoelting, Brandon Bilyeu and Wills.

New career records were set for James Sundquist and Chris Long, according to Coach Fulton. Sundquist placed third in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races and Long — who started pole vaulting just five weeks ago — set a career best of 10-6 with a sixth place finish.

At a regular league meet on May 9, Katy McGillen won the high jump, javelin, triple jump and the 100-meter high hurdles, according to Fulton. He said Hern’s 123-3 discus toss set a school record.

Fulton said the boys won 12 of 17 events at the meet, led by Kyle McGillen. He said McGillen won all three jumping events, long jump, high jump and triple jump. Wills took first in the 200 and 400 meter runs, and came 1/10th of a second off of setting a new school record.

The Falcons will travel to Sultan High School for district championships at 5 p.m. Friday.
