“South Whidbey’s girl basketball players started a new business last weekend — the business of ruining other teams’ senior nights.After winning their senior night and regular-season home closer last Tuesday, the Falcons went on the road Friday and Saturday to give the seniors at Granite Falls and Mount Baker one last traumatic basketball memory. South Whidbey’s girls buried the Tigers 74-47 Friday, then went way up north to steal victory from the Mountaineers in a 55-52 squeaker.In the driver’s seat 40-30 at the half at Granite, the Falcons made sure there was no doubt by game’s end. Behind scoring leader Lindsay Sievers, the team piled on 34 more points while limiting the Tigers to 17.Sievers, a senior, scored 18 points to lead team scoring for the first time in her career, and made five assists that brought the Falcons even more points.She had an exceptional game, coach Nancy Ricketts said. She’s going out with a bang.Close behind Sievers with 17 points was Kelsey Ellis. After a frustrating game against Meridian Tuesday in which the Trojans prevented her from reaching the 1,000-point career mark, Ellis found shooting room enough against the Tigers to achieve the milestone and to push 11 points beyond it. She made the jump from 998 points to 1,000 in the first quarter, making a steal in the defensive end, then running the court on her way an easy lay-in.When I made the lay-in I thought ‘Oh, tonight I’ll make it, Ellis said.Coach Ricketts said so far, Ellis is the only Falcon she knows of who has made 1,000 career points. If there are other 1,000-point scorers, their names do no appear in school record books.To make her total, Ellis had to score an average of about 12 points per game during her four-year high school career. She said that sounds like quite a bit in retrospect.That’s a lot of points to me, she said.Win battle at BakerThe Falcons had a much tighter contest against Mount Baker Saturday night. Coming off a three-hour bus ride, South Whidbey’s girls fell behind 29-17 by half time, and were still down by 10 going into the fourth quarter.But then, they got hot. Kelsey Ellis blew the game wide open, hitting three of her four 3-point shots on the night during the eight-minute period. At the foul line, the Falcons were perfect, going 8-for-8. They more than doubled up the Mountaineers in rebounds and in scoring, whisking by the stunned northerners with a 25-12 attack that gave them a narrow, three-point win.Coach Ricketts said even though this game started slowly for her team, there was not doubt the her players’ minds that it would go in the stat books under the W column.They weren’t going to lose, she said.The Falcons played their last regular-season game Tuesday against Nooksack.Box scoreFriday’s gameS.
