Falcons share in basketball honors

South Whidbey High School junior Hilary Wick was named an all-conference selection in the North Cascades Conference.

“Hilary Wick was always in the thick of the actin for the Falcons this season, as in this 50-42 win over Lynnwood.South Whidbey High School junior Hilary Wick was the only Falcon girls basketball player to be named an all-conference selection in the North Cascades Conference.Wick, the leading scorer for the Falcons all year, was named by NCC coaches to the conference’s second-team lineup. Players from Lynden Christian controlled the first team selections, as both Lync seniors Sarah Haggren and Leah Timmermans made it into the NCC top five. Blaine received two spots on the all-conference list, as did Nooksack Valley, qualifying two players for the second-team group.Nooksack’s Shelly Harders was named the league MVP, while Granite Falls’ Mark Nueman took Coach of the Year honors.Though they were not able to put any marks into the W column of their stats, South Whidbey High School’s boys basketball players received recognition this week for the the hard work they put in for the 2000-2001 season.Junior Tim Gabelein was recognized both by his team and by the coaches in the North Cascades Conference. He was named MVP for the Falcons and 2000-2001 team captain, as well as being named as a second-team player for the NCC. Gabelein averaged 18.5 points a game this season and scored more than 30 points in a game three times.Also honored was senior Brett Perkins, who was voted best defensive player by his teammates. Josh Coleman was named Most Improved, while Josh Nehf and Brian Gabelein were Most Inspirational. Brian Gabelein also joined his brother as a co-captain for the season.On the junior varsity team, Brandon Adams was MVP, Aaron Morris was best defensive player, Bill Schneeman was most improved, and Scott Perkins was most inspirational. Among the freshmen, Travis Tornga was the MVP, Auston Riesman was best at defense, Paul Edgeman was Most Improved, and Abe Cuttler was Most Inspirational. “
