Taryn Langlois, Jennifer Pan, Hallie Mansfield and Adrienne Hawley didn’t give anyone a break last Thursday.
Golf clubs in hand, the girls swept four of the top five placings at the Northwest District 2A meet at Lynden’s Homestead Farms, positioning themselves as one of the largest contingents headed for next week’s state meet.
After winning the North Cascades Conference meet last week, the Falcons were even more thorough this time around. Langlois, a sophomore, won the meet by shooting a 94 — four more than teammate Jennifer Pan, who was the runner-up with a 98. Another sophomore, Hallie Mansfield, took third with a 100-stroke day, while junior Adrienne Hawley was fourth overall at 113.
But these scores and placings were more a relief than anything for Falcon Coach Tom Sage, who knew his girls were playing on a course that invites self destruction.
“It’s the kind of course where a good golfer can get in trouble,” he said.
With the exception of senior Maria Zontine — who finished the day with a 119 and outside the state cutoff — the Falcons overcame Homestead’s 130 slope rating and large number of water hazards to win the meet with a stroke total of 524. While Sage had hoped all five of the girls would make it to state, he said qualifying four is still a big achievement.
“Five is pretty rare,” he said.
Getting all of them through to the second day of state play at Sunnyside’s Black Rock Creek Golf Course next Tuesday is the goal now, since team points are given out in the second round of golf at the tournament. Last year, none of South Whidbey’s three state competitors qualified for the second round.
