The Falcon fastpitch team just plain took advantage Monday afternoon.

Six walks and two dropped third strikes, along with nine hits put enough South Whidbey runners on base to end yet another North Cascades Conference blowout early — a regular occurrence for the Falcons.

Hosting Meridian at South Whidbey High School, the Falcons slammed the Trojans 12-1 in a game that went fast.

After going up 2-0 in the first inning, the Falcons punished the Trojans with six runs in the third. Junior Bronwyn Russell lit the spark, getting on base with a hard looper that dropped behind Meridian’s shortstop and well in front of left and center field. Then, as Meridian’s pitching started to break down, she moved to third on two wild pitches. Sophomore Christie Robinson, who was at bat, then took advantage of a dropped third strike to make it to first.

With sophomore Carolann Lubach at the plate, the game started to break open. Robinson stole second and Russell came home during the attempted throwdown to second. After the dust settled on the Trojan miscues, Lubach smacked a single to right field. Both she and Robinson then came home on an Ashley Lopez double.

Also scoring in the inning were Val Mock and Jenny Murphy.

In the fourth, the Falcons picked up another four runs on three walks and three singles to put the game away. The contest ended after the top of the fifth on the 10-run mercy rule.

Keeping Meridian almost completely off the scoreboard were Robinson and senior Lucy Daumen. Robinson registered seven strikouts in three innings of work, then yielded to Daumen, who finished the game by pitching to the strike zone and forcing hitters to play into trouble.

The Falcons are now 12-0 in NCC play. They play again at home today at 4:30 p.m., this time against Mount Baker.
