It wasn’t the best of days to start a fastpitch softball season, but at least the rain held off.

In a cold and windy showdown on the road with the girls from 3A Lynnwood High School, the South Whidbey Falcons pretty much restarted where they left off last year — as winners.

After falling behind by a run in the first inning and having no luck at the plate until almost the midway point of the game, the Falcons put the wraps on Lynnwood’s batters then loosed their own. Two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings, and a single run in the fifth, were enough to take a comparatively close contest — for South Whidbey — 5-1.

Behind senior pitcher Ashely Lopez — who struck out four batters and gave up just two hits in four innings — and sophomore Christie Robinson with no hits, no walks and five strikeouts in the final three innings, South Whidbey’s batters were able to dismantle Lynnwood at will. Leading the team at the plate were Bronwyn Russell, who was 2-for-3 and scored twice, Jenny Murphy with a ground-rule double, and Lucy Daumen, who was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The team was perfect in the field, going errorless through seven innings.

The Falcon junior varsity team also won, pummelling Lynnwood 24-4.

The girls open their home season on Monday against Sedro-Woolley. Both varsity and JV teams start at 3:45 p.m.
