Senior night came early for the South Whidbey boys soccer team.
In the most lopsided game the Falcons have played this season, six seniors — Adam Jaffe, Tyler Nettlebeck, Jasper Hein, Scott Perkins, Luis Garcia and Abe Smith-Groening — scored Wednesday on their home field to beat Mount Baker 7-1 and to propel South Whidbey to third in the North Cascades Conference.
The team has now won five straight, a streak that has taken them from a losing record to being one of the top teams in the conference.
“It was a great way to go into the end of the season,” said Fran Einterz, South Whidbey’s coach.
The team really had something to celebrate, according to Einterz. The game gave Smith-Groening — who had missed almost every game this season due to injury — his first goal of the year. And, as if to make up for the time off, he scored a second goal in the game.
Hein also came up with his first goal for 2003, as did Nettlebeck, who earned his first-ever varsity score in the game.
Notching assists on the night were Smith-Groening, Perkins, junior Spencer Buckman, sophomore Kevin Dunigan, and Jaffe, who had two.
In goal, senior LJ Godsey did the stopper duties in front of the net, holding the Mountaineers to a single point on the score board. Joe Gunn, the team’s regular starting goalkeeper, played out in the second half. Unfortunately, Einterz said, Gunn drew a yellow card for running into — of all players — the Mountaineers’ goalkeeper.
Currently the Falcons are holding strong in third place in the NCC and have a good chance of holding that position into the district playoffs, which begin at the end of next week.
“We really need to win the next two games to hold our spot,” he said.
The Falcons are now 9-5 in the NCC. They play the last game of the season at Meridian Tuesday. Both junior varsity and varsity teams play at 4:30 p.m.
