An unoccupied home belonging to a Midvale Road man burned Sunday morning, taking with it memories of a childhood on Whidbey Island.

At about 8 a.m. Sunday, Fire District 3 firefighters arrived at the scene of a house fire that had completely engulfed a home on Midvale Road. Eldon Baker, the fire commander at the scene, said there was not much to save when he and other firefighters arrived. He said the fire had been burning for some time and had consumed much of the structure.

“It was beyond fully involved,” he said.

The firefighters doused the flames quickly, extinguishing most of the flames by 8:30 a.m.

Roy Hagglund, the house’s owner, said he was sad to see the structure burn. The house, which was located next to his Midvale Road home, belonged to his parents.

“I grew up in that house,” he said.

No one was made homeless or hurt by the fire. Hagglund said there were only “a couple of birds and a couple of mice” living inside.

Baker said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical; however, the fire district has not officially listed that as a cause.

Sunday’s blaze was the fifth major structure fire on South Whidbey this year. Two barns, a garage and a home burned in March. With the exception of the house, all the other structures were total losses.
