Oak Harbor Fire Department responded to a residential fire around 8:30 Tuesday night. No one was injured, and the cause is still unknown.
Firefighters arrived to 991 Northwest Illahee Drive within five minutes of the call, finding heavy smoke and flames wafting from the garage. While three adults and two children were inside the home when the fire caught, by this point they had evacuated and were safe.
North Whidbey Fire and Rescue and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Fire Department also arrived on scene. The fire made for relatively quick work, and the firefighters contained the damage to the garage.
Fire Chief Travis Anderson said he often tells families to make sure the smoke detectors are working and, especially kids, to have an escape plan. This fire is an example of both systems working properly.
Anderson said he is relieved that everyone made it out safely.
“I want to commend our firefighters and our partner agencies for their dedication and teamwork in protecting our community,” he said.
