No injuries were reported in a blaze that charred a mobile home in Freeland on Friday.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded to the East Harbor Road address after receiving the call around 11:18 a.m. on July 26, according to Assistant Chief Terry Ney. Firefighters arrived to find a double-wide manufactured home with a carport fully engulfed.

Although the house wasn’t destroyed by the fire, it was damaged enough that it wouldn’t be economically feasible to rebuild it, Ney said.

“But from what neighbors told us, it was in marginal condition to begin with,” he said.

The road was closed for about two hours as firefighters remained on scene to mop up the blaze. The cause is unknown.

Ney said it’s unclear who owns the home, which has been in disputed ownership for a number of years. Neighbors have reported transient individuals coming and going and suspected drug activity.

The structure was unoccupied during the time of the fire.
