Forum to address proposed school bond

The South Whidbey School Board will host a community forum from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18.

The South Whidbey School Board will host a community forum next week dedicated to a proposed bond.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the South Whidbey High School New Commons, members of the public have the chance to ask questions about the bond. The meeting is in person only and will not be offered through Zoom.

People are also encouraged to take a survey on the bond, which is available online at sw.wednet.edu/our-district/bond-2023.

So far, two presentations about the proposed $80 million bond have been given during previous school board meetings. The bond would span a 20-year period and collect funds that would go towards updating K-12 educational facilities within the district.

The 2024 bond rate is 70 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. For someone with a home valued at $500,000, this amounts to a monthly property tax increase of $29.08.

The bond proposal may be on the April 12 Island County Special Election ballot. The board has not yet formally approved the bond amount.
