The Whidbey General Hospital Foundation is offering an informational program for women whose family members have suffered from cancer.

“Daughters of Women with Breast Cancer: Defining the Odds” will be held at Whidbey General Hospital from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17.

Program topics will include breast cancer and early detection, with Dr. Robert Hawkins, medical director of diagnostic imaging at Whidbey General Hospital. He will provide an overview of the development stages of cancer, issues surrounding mammograms and the new MRI recommendations.

Joy Knox, of Providence Breast Center in Everett, will speak about risk factors for breast cancer, current trends, thoughts about gene testing and hormone replacement therapy.

Renee Yanke, oncology program manager at Whidbey General Hospital, will speak about current treatment and approaches, including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or some combination of the three.

Pre-registration is requested and a risk assessment will be mailed to participants to complete and return. The questionnaire will be returned to participants on May 17.
