A bicyclist collided with a van in a busy Freeland intersection Thursday, prompting a lane closure and trip to the emergency room.

Mandi Campbell, 30, was transported by ambulance to Whidbey General Hospital with what emergency responders described as non-life threatening injuries. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed Campbell was treated and released the same day.

The accident occurred at about 7:20 a.m. in the intersection of Highway 525 and Fish Road. Campbell was reportedly southbound on Main Street on a bicycle and carrying two bicycle tires. According to police, Campbell allegedly ran the red light and t-boned a 2003 Mazda MPV van that was traveling through the intersection.

The collision occurred on the driver’s side door. Campbell was reported to have suffered some injuries, but their extent could not be confirmed by press time.

“She’s extremely lucky,” said Sgt. Laura Price, of the Island County Sheriff’s Office. “It could have been a whole lot worse than it was.”

The driver, Sherri Short of Langley, was not hurt.

According to Price, Short was reportedly driving at or under the speed limit, which is 45 mph. She was not at fault, and had the legal right of way, Price said.

However, bicycles are held to the same traffic rules as motor vehicles, and Campbell would be cited for failing to stop at a traffic light, Price said. Drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash.

The collision did result in some minor traffic interruptions for about 30 minutes; Southbound highway motorists were rerouted to Main Street and some access to Fish Road was restricted. The highway was totally reopened by about 8 a.m.
