The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation commissioners have elected Joel Gerlach as chairman of the board.

Prior to a regular business meeting Wednesday evening, the board held its annual meeting during which they elected officers for 2015.

Park Director Doug Coutts said that the election grants the commissioners the important opportunity to “switch things up” in order to invite new perspectives.

Don Wood had served as chairman for 2014, and said he would prefer to switch positions due to work and family obligations. Wood will serve as the commissioner “at large.”

Gerlach had served as the vice chairman for 2014.

Bob Hezel was elected as the new vice chairperson. Mark Helpenstell will remain in his position as secretary. Matt Simms will remain treasurer.
