Whidbey 3Scoring:Gutzmer 2, RomeySouth Whidbey High School girls soccer made it official Thursday night — they are our nail-biter team of the year.Playing North Cascade League rival and league leader Granite Falls at Waterman Field, the Falcons made their third trip of the year into sudden death overtime. Unfortunately, the team was not able to pull off a shoot-out miracle in this contest as they did in an Oct. 7 win over Blaine. The Falcons fell 4-3 to Granite Falls for their second loss in a week, and watched their chances for postseason play slip almost completely out of their grasp.It was one of those games that could have gone either way. Shaking off a 4-0 loss to Lynden Christian Tuesday night, Falcon goalkeeper Alexis Stark was stingy against Granite Falls, allowing only two goals during regular play. At the same time, Jaci Gutzmer and Shaija Romey put away two for the Falcons to take the game into overtime.But, after two scoreless, five-minute periods, the teams went to a shootout. Gutzmer was able to add a goal to the Falcons’ total, but the Tigers put away two, giving them the win.Falcon coach Paul Arand said the playoff picture looks murky for the team, which now carries a 3-5 league record.“I’m going to have to see how everything sorts out after last night,” Arand said.The Falcons take on Nooksack on the road Saturday in the final regular season game of the year.”
