Facing a smaller and less-disciplined squad in their first home game of the season, the South Whidbey varsity girls basketball team cruised to an easy victory in front of a hometown crowd Tuesday night.
Senior Hilary Wick led the way with a 20-point performance as the Falcons outshot and outscored a nearly helpless Chimacum team. Keeping the ball under better control than they did last Friday against Klahowya, the Falcons took the lead early by compiling an 11-4 advantage in the first quarter. After that, the points came even more easily. Using their height advantage and by having only 10 turnovers to Chimacum’s 29, the South Whidbey girls piled up points almost exponentially.
Even though the game looked one-sided on the scoreboard, each team had its strengths and weaknesses. The Chimacum players used accurate passing to get their points, but had to put the ball into so many hands to get around the Falcon defense that turnovers were inevitable. For South Whidbey, nailing outside shots was the easy part. Their inside shooting, said Falcon coach Sam Lee, still needs work.
“What we’re continuing to have is a problem with our shots inside,” he said.
Lee said he was pleased with his team’s defensive effort and its improved ball handling.
The girls play next in a road game against Lynden Christian Tuesday. Varsity play starts at 7 p.m. at Lynden Christian High School, while the junior varsity and C-squads start at 5:15 p.m.
