Diverging fortunes for the South Whidbey boys and girls golf teams could still mean good things for the post season.

On Wednesday, the Falcon girls lost their first North Cascades Conference meet in two seasons, coming up short on points in a three-way against teams from Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley at Raspberry Ridge Golf Course in Bellingham.

The next day, the Falcon boys won an NCC quadrangular at Semiahmoo in Blaine — barely. They tallied 217 strokes as a team in nine-hole play, three fewer than host Blaine High School.

At the two meets, both teams experienced a mortality they have not been known for in recent years. But, said coaches Tom Sage and Mick Heggenes, the loss and close call were needed signals showing the Falcon players that now is the time to boost their level of play.

The girls’ loss was a shorthanded one, with senior Adrienne Hawley out of town on a school trip. Junior Jennifer Pan shared medalist honors with Jill Quinn from Nooksack as both scored 24 Stableford points. Also contributing to South Whidbey’s 96-point total — which was nine points behind the Mountaineers — were Jessica Johnson with 20, Hailie Mansfield with 19, Nici Eaton with 17, Marcie Strong with 16 and Jenna Lindus with 10.

At Semiahmoo, deuces were wild in the Falcon lineup. Kevin Carter and Jeff Strong finished with 39 strokes apiece, while Reed Dettrich and Bryan Wilson tied at 46, and Drew Aernie and Chris Erickson knotted at 47.

Coming up for the boys is a home invitational Tuesday against seven 4A and 2A teams at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. The 18-hole meet starts at 2 p.m.

The girls compete next on Thursday in an NCC triangular at Useless Bay. Play begins at 2:45 p.m.
