Anyone who would like to contribute to the fund can make a donation to Henny or call 222-3248.Jim Larsen, staff photo Tonya Henny is willing to give up her luxuriously long dark brown hair to help raise money to fight cancer during this year’s Relay for Life scheduled for next weekend, June 22-23 at the South Whidbey High School track.Henny has challenged fellow members of the Soroptimist Club of South Whidbey to help shear her hair by making donations to Relay to Life. She was inspired by last year’s Locks of Love campaign, in which others cut their hair to benefit cancer research.I was convinced that would be a way to help, said Henny, who began planning this year’s titanic trim a year ago. It spurred the group I’m with, the Soroptimists, to raise money. I’ve only had my hair trimmed once in the last year. Henny’s hair has grown down to her waist, but it won’t be that long by the time Relay to Life occurs. She has offered to cut 12 inches of her hair if Soroptimists raise $1,500, or 14 inches for $2,000.How far will she go? Henny isn’t contemplating a Buhner buzz if a lot of money rolls in, but she didn’t entirely rule out the possibility. Would I be willing to do that for any amount of money? Perhaps, but she would obviously have to be shown a lot of cash.Tonya, her husband George, their young daughter Kiana and baby son Liam have long supported Relay for Life, which is in its sixth year. Tonya captained the Soroptimist team the first two years, and has participated ever since. Last year George and the kids and I slept in a tent, she said. It was fun, despite the all-night music. During the walk-a-thon, Liam was pushed in a stroller while Kiana rode her tricycle.This year, Tonya wanted to get even more involved by helping to raise more money.
