In a tradition now entering its 10th year, Hearts and Hammers is getting ready for its annual home repair blitz on South Whidbey, and will kick off its volunteer drive and fund-raising effort with the ever popular Spaghetti Dinner next Friday.
The Fellowship Hall at Langley Methodist Church will once again be fragrant with the savory aroma of fine Italian cuisine, prepared under the direction of chief chef Richard Merrill. This year’s dining experience will include spaghetti with a choice of meat or vegetarian sauce, salad, garlic bread, dessert tray and beverage. The cost is still only $5 for each adult, $3 for children under 12.
The February spaghetti dinner event is a major fund-raiser for Hearts and Hammers, a community based group that provides free repair and maintenance on the homes of people who are unable to do so themselves.
The dinner also offers an opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors as this grassroots effort moves into its 10th year.
Volunteers will be able to sign up for the Saturday, May 3 workday, and browse the selection of this year’s special T-shirts and hats, embroidered with the theme “10 years of neighbors helping neighbors.”
The organization has already identified many possible home sites for this year. Last year more than 400 volunteers spread out over most of South Whidbey to work on homes during the one-day event. Those who can’t be at the dinner will find volunteer signup sheets at post offices and local building suppliers. A Web site, donated by Whidbey Net, will soon provide another source of information and opportunity to sign up.
Anyone interested in assisting with the dinner should contact Richard at 579-7469. Kitchen help, servers, and a cleanup crew are needed.
