The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District showed no interest in purchasing property at the Holmes Harbor Golf Course at its regular monthly meeting Wednesday.
District officials discussed the risks and potential headaches that would come with buying property. There are two independent listings for sale: the Holmes Harbor Sewer District’s 50 acres of fairways, which costs $450,000, and Holmes Harbor, LLC, which is selling the clubhouse and waterfront property for $1.6 million.
Director Doug Coutts felt the best option would be to purchase the fairway portion, but because the land is restricted to being operated only as a golf course, he recommended they sit back and wait for a public member to step up.
Bids on the property close Sept. 9 and a $50,000 bond is required in order to bid. The deadline is far too short to make any moves, according to Matt Simms, Parks and Recreation Board Commissioner.
“It would take us a year to get this money if we wanted to do it,” Simms said. “If this is destined to stay a course in somebody’s hands or sit there idle like it had before, I think we should step back and let it play out.”
