“It’s a good idea that grew.It was simple to begin with. The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District wanted to open its snack bar at the community park seven days a week for lunchtime and afternoon service. Then, the district hired Kendrah Wick to managed the snack bar, and she promptly convinced park staff to operate a deli as well. Now a growing lunch crowd has choices for lunch. There are hot dogs, deli sandwiches, chips, pop, coffee, candy and other snacks. Truly, it was deli-cious planning.Open since June 11, deli hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends.The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation Deli may be the most fun place to have lunch on the Southend. No, you won’t hear the sound of clinking dishes, frying food, or quiet lunchtime conversation. More would be the gruff yell of You’re out! from a baseball diamond, the laughing of children playing at the Playground in the Park, or the soothing hum of a lawnmower cutting the grass on a distant soccer field.That, and really good sandwiches, are what lunch in the park is all about, said Kendrah Wick.You get to sit in the park and have lunch and be outside, she said.This week, the deli brought in good business from baseball players working out at a baseball camp in the park. Hot dogs were the most popular lunch item, while candy and pop flew across the counter all afternoon.Parks director Jerry Cole said the deli is just the beginning. There are more ideas to try. Later this year, the deli may begin offering picnic lunches in the park. For a fee, deli staff would prepare a picnic lunch, pack it in a picnic basket, and send along a good sitting blanket for couples, friends or families who want to eat under the trees and skies at the park.We hope to try a lot of different things along the way, Cole said. The deli will stay open into September. Cole and Wick encourage everyone, including business people looking for a reason to escape the office for an hour, to stop in for lunch, a snack or even an early dinner. Since there are plenty of picnic tables and about 20 acres of grass, no reservations are necessary. “
