Democrat Angie Homola’s lead over Republican Mac McDowell has now dwindled to just 76 votes in the District 2 Island County commissioner’s race, according to the latest vote count released by the county election’s office.

Homola had been leading by 383 votes, and the spread was Homola with 50.5 percent of the vote, and McDowell, 49.4 percent.

Her lead is now at 50.1 percent. McDowell now has 49.8 percent.

The race has tightened each time additional ballots have been counted.

The county released new numbers in the race just before 5 p.m. Friday.

So far, 47,836 ballots have been counted. There are roughly 700 ballots left to count.

McDowell is a 16-year veteran of the county board of commissioners. Homola, an activist turned candidate, is taking her first shot at elected office.
