The fate of a 4.5-acre Bayview property purchased years ago by Whidbey General Hospital for $2 million may be decided at a meeting in Coupeville next week.

Surplus property to sell is listed among the agenda items at the board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 a.m. Monday, May 12, in the hospital’s conference room A. Resolution 347 is to be presented by Hank Hanigan, the hospital’s chief operations officer.

Attempts to reach Hanigan for details about the agenda item before deadline were unsuccessful Friday morning.

In 2008, the hospital bought the property from Verlane Gabelein for $2 million. A private appraisal was never conducted, but the Island County Assessor’s Office tallied the value of the property at the time at $618,000.

The plan for the property, located across Highway 525 from The Goose Community Grocer, was to build a new South Whidbey Clinic. Those plans have since soured and the hospital is considering selling the property.

A discussion last month resulted in the board agreeing to talk about the issue again this month. If the board agrees to sell the property, state law requires that it have three independent appraisals conducted.

The assessor’s office listed the value of the undeveloped lot at $595,890 in 2013.
