Two motor vehicle accidents that happened in quick succession at the intersection of Highway 525 and Coles Road blocked traffic Saturday and sent several people to the hospital.
The first incident, which took place at about 10:35 a.m., involved a collision between a 1988 Nissan pickup truck and a 1988 Chevrolet Suburban. Though the Island County Sheriff’s Office, which processed the accident, did not have much information about the collision this week, sheriff’s spokesperson Jan Smith said the crash sent two people to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Less than an hour later, the same intersection was the site of a second collision. According to the Washington State Patrol, Roderick B. Ohlee of Sea-Tac, 57, lost control of his classic Harley Davidson motorcycle as he was approaching Coles Road. Both he and his wife Kathleen, who was riding on the back of the bike, went down in the northbound lane, then struck a 1996 Mazda 626 driven by Brian Harding of Clinton.
The patrol report shows that both motorcyclists were wearing helmets. Kathleen Ohlee was airlifted from South Whidbey High School to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to be treated for several broken bones.
