Investigators are trying to identify the body of a man discovered on a Cornet Bay beach on North Whidbey Tuesday afternoon.

Island County Deputy Coroner Shantel Porter said the deceased white male appeared to be in his early to mid-30s. He was 6 feet tall, about 180 pounds, clean shaven and had a receding hairline. He was wearing jeans, a light jacket, hiking boots and a very thin gold band on his ring finger.

The cause of the man’s death has not been determined.

Porter explained that a beach walker found the debris-covered body at the water’s edge at around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Porter said it’s unclear at this point whether the body washed ashore from elsewhere or he died on the beach and was covered with seaweed and other debris from the tide. It doesn’t appear that the body was in the water very long.

There is no evidence that he may have jumped off Deception Pass Bridge, she said. No vehicles believed to be associated with the man were found parked at Cornet Bay or the bridge.

Based on the man’s clothing, investigators don’t think he was a kayaker.
