The Island Chapter of American Red Cross honored eight “Real Heroes,” including several people from South Whidbey on Friday, May 2.

The Lifetime Achievement award went to Marion Henny of Whidbey Telecom. Henny was honored for her community service and core values. Last May, Henny offered her home as temporary living quarters to a person who suffered a devastating fire in their Langley home.

Mike Stamper, executive director, presented the award and Bob Gabelein, a Whidbey Telecom employee and Red Cross volunteer, accepted on behalf of Henny who was unable to attend the event. Team Leader of the Southern Unit, Nancy Waddell, read a prepared speech from Henny which thanked the group for the recognition.

“The small help I gave to one in our community who needed temporary housing after a tragic fire totaled her home was a privilege. Our communities are full of real and unsung heroes,” Henny said in the prepared speech.

Jessica Larson and her search dog, Angus, were honored for their work as Whidbey Search Dog volunteers during the Oso mudslide.
