Creating rules for voting and non-voting members of the Island County Fair Association will be a point of discussion Monday night.
The fair association, a private organization, puts on the annual Whidbey Island Fair and other select events at the county-owned fairgrounds in Langley.
Its membership helps guide and curate the events, and is considering creating two levels of membership: voting members and non-voting members.
Essentially, a voting member has to participate in the monthly fair association meetings and volunteer with the group or annual fair.
According to a fair association newsletter, voting members would be required to attend two fair association meetings during the course of the year and volunteer for the organization and/or fair.
This change would take immediate effect following an affirmative vote, according to the newsletter.
That would change from the current, all fair association membership voting rights. The only rule now is a one-year waiting period for new members. Such a change has some fairgrounds tenants, who no longer contract with the fair association but are required to vacate during the annual five-day fair, and members worried.
“We feel that we should have input since it’s going to be affecting the whole community; everybody that rents there is going to be affected by the fair,” said Cary Jurriaans, owner of Whidbey Island Fine Arts Studio and a fair association member.
The reason for the proposed bylaw change was not stated in the fair association newsletter.
Attempts to reach fair association President Jason Kalk by press time Friday were unsuccessful. Vice President Wendy Sundquist was out of the country.
The fair association meets at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12 in the Coffman Building at the Island County Fairgrounds in Langley.
The group will also review its budget and the 2016 Whidbey Island Fair.
