Here’s the Record’s pick for the best bets at the Island County Fair this weekend:
Today
While every fair day is special, the big parade on Saturday is always a major highlight. Starting at 10 a.m. in downtown Langley, the parade features horses and their riders, musical floats and more.
At noon is the livestock auction, where bidders — who get a free admission for the day — can choose among farm
animals presented by the 4-H kids who raised them.
Nothing can be more fun than watching children ride their stick horses in the main arena at 1 p.m., unless it’s the egg-and-spoon alpaca race at 3:30 p.m.
Wrapping up the day’s entertainment at the midway stage are the Timebenders at 7 p.m., a crowd favorite that serves up 50 years of music and a ton of costume changes.
Tickets for a Willie Nelson concert will be given away.
Sunday
Get to the horse arena by 10 a.m. as the 4-H Parade of Champions demonstrate their animal husbandry skills.
At 11 a.m. the kid’s pole climbing finals will amaze onlookers as the Bunyon Buster Log Show swings into high gear. The main show begins at 1 p.m.
If the alpaca race the day before wasn’t enough, check out the alpaca limbo contest in the livestock arena, also at 1 p.m.
In the cavy barn at 3 p.m., the always spectacular guinea pig race will be held — don’t miss it.
Finally, the Cherry Cherry Band will wrap up the 84th Island County Fair in style at 6:30 p.m. on the midway stage.
