Island County will get a state grant for $630,741 to help reduce homelessness.

The funding will go to Project Home Base, which will provide services and transitional housing to 45 people who are discharged from jail, hospitals, mental health or chemical dependency facilities.

The grant was part of $5 million in funding announced this week by the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.

“Every family in Washington State deserves a safe and decent place to live” said Juli Wilkerson, director of the agency. “These projects will help reduce homelessness and move us closer to achieving the goals set forth in the state’s 10-Year plan to reduce homelessness.”

The grants come from the state’s Homeless Grant Assistance Program.
