Island County commissioners approved a plan on Monday to leave the gap in Glendale Road. The road south of Clinton was split last year by a flash flood.

Commissioners adopted proposals by the county public works department that the damaged road be sealed off on both ends, leaving a 500-foot opening for Glendale Creek.

Commissioners also approved a plan for restoration work on the lower stream at Glendale. The stream is an important salmon-spawning area.

The projects will include $250,000 to secure the roadway — $160,000 to fashion road ends, and $90,000 to stabilize the embankments — and another $250,000 to restore the stream in its lower reach at Glendale.

Most of the money will come from zero-interest loans available from the County Road Administration Board, a statewide agency.

Work is expected to begin by late summer or early fall, officials said.
