JV team also perfect

The only team in the NCC this season comparable to the Falcon varsity was South Whidbey’s junior varsity team.

In a windstorm Tuesday, the JV Falcons beat Lakewood 7-1 to cap a 15-0 season. Freshman Hope Richards led all scorers with two goals.

During the past two years, the Falcon JV girls have gone 29-1. In the past four years, they’ve lost only five games.

Mike Cotton, the team’s coach since 2000, noted that only five goals were scored on his team all season, while his girls put 60 balls into the net. Also crucial in the team’s success were Falcon defenders Morgan Root, Suzi Cruchon, Danielle Julison and Jennifer Shafer.

“They kept the goalkeepers very lonely back there,” he said.

Keepers Ashley Poplawski and Amelia Cave — along with their defenders — get the credit for 10 shutouts on the season.

Tuesday’s game was a challenge for both the Falcons and the Cougars. Playing on Waterman Field, both had to contend with wind gusts over 50 mph. At one point in the second half, the wind caught a high South Whidbey shot and froze it in mid-air.
