A 15-year-old Freeland boy is facing charges related to a Aug. 23 house fire in Honeymoon Bay.
Prosecutors charged the boy in Island County Juvenile Court last month with burglary in the second degree and reckless burning in the first degree.
According to the police report, a fire that started on a porch caused severe damage to an uninhabited house on Honeymoon Bay Road. Investigators cracked the case after the boy admitted in Snapchat messages to friends that he was responsible.
Two teenagers later admitted to going inside the house at night and throwing stuff around. One of the boys threw matches into a cardboard box that contained a roll of paper towels. After it caught fire, he allegedly threw it out the door, but it landed on the porch and then fell beneath the porch, lighting it on fire, the report states.
The boy who was charged, however, claimed that it was his friend who kicked the burning roll of paper towels under the porch, the report states.
