Greenbank artist Kathleen Otley was chosen for an Invitational Show by La Conner’s Museum of Northwest Art.
Otley’s willow wall sculptures will be presented at the 30th annual Arts Alive! Invitational Show in La Conner on Halloween and Dia de los Muertos weekend.
The show will be a celebration of Dia de los Muertos, imagination, art and music and will run from Friday, Oct. 31, to Sunday, Nov. 2, in various downtown La Conner locations.
Otley’s shields will appear along with the works of 12 other Northwest artists at Maple Hall at 104 Commercial Ave. accompanied by music and demonstrations.
For over 25 years, Otley has been creating the woven willow bundles which have become her signature, distinctly Northwest design.
“The juxtaposition of the primitive and the contemporary in these willow sculptures symbolize our inner connectedness with earlier times, when the spiritual journey was the measure of a life,” wrote Otley in a recent press release.
The artist’s career has included a long list of public commissions including a sculpture for the Peace Island Medical Center in Friday Harbor and one for the Black Butte Ranch Visitors Center in central Oregon. She was also commissioned to create an ornament for the 1993 White House Christmas tree, now part of the Smithsonian’s permanent collection of contemporary crafts.
The opening Artists’ Reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at Maple Hall. The celebration continues from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2. Admission is free.
